How long a car wrap lasts and what shortens it
The number everyone repeats is "three to five years", but the real range is much wider and depends on things you can actually control.

The usual range, and why it is so wide
The figure we give in the workshop, and the one you will find in the FAQs on our wrapping pages, is three to five years for a top-range film fitted properly. It is an honest range, not a catalogue number: what makes two cars wrapped on the same day end up so different is not the film, it is how they are used.
A car that sleeps in a garage and gets washed by hand comfortably passes five years. One parked in the sun all year and run through a brush wash can fall short of three. That is why it is a range and not a single number.
1. The grade of the film
This carries the most weight. Top-range films have UV protection, adhesive with air-release channels and a formulation designed to come off cleanly years later. Budget films save on exactly that.
The problem with a cheap film does not show in the first year, it shows when it is time to take it off: it tears into pieces, leaves adhesive behind and turns removal into a long job.
2. The finish
- Plain gloss colours
- The most stable. They are the reference point for any comparison of durability.
- Matte and satin
- They hold up well, but they show dirt more and tolerate no gloss products, so incorrect maintenance ages them sooner.
- Colour-shift and metallics
- Sensitive to prolonged exposure; the roof and bonnet are where the loss of intensity shows first.
- Chrome
- The most delicate of all, both to fit and to live with. They need strict care.
3. Where the car sleeps
Sunlight is the number one enemy, and it does not hit the whole car equally: roof, bonnet and the top of the wings take the sun head-on and are the first areas to tire. On a garaged car that difference barely exists.
Near the coast salt air is added to it, and it attacks the edges of the film if it builds up. Rinsing frequently with clean water solves a good part of the problem.
4. How you wash it
A brush wash is what shortens the life of a wrap fastest. Every pass pulls at the edges, and there comes a point where one lifts and water starts getting underneath.
A pressure washer held close and angled into an edge does the same damage in a single session. Wash by hand with two buckets, or use a touchless tunnel, and always keep the jet perpendicular to the surface.
5. The quality of the fitting
Film overstretched on a curve is left under tension from day one and pulls back over time: that is what makes lifting appear in specific spots while the rest of the car is perfect.
And the edges: if the film is cut at the edge instead of being wrapped inside, dirt and water find a way in from the first day. That is where you see, two years later, the difference between two quotes that looked like the same job.
What happens at the end of its life
An aged wrap does not fall off: it loses colour intensity, becomes stiffer and the finish stops being even. That is the moment to remove it, not to wait for trouble.
If the film was a good one and the paint was healthy, what appears underneath is clear coat better preserved than on other cars of the same age: it has been shielded from the sun and from light rubs all that time.
FAQ
Can the wrap be removed without damaging the paint?
Yes, if the paint is in good condition and it is removed with the right technique, applying heat under control. The risk appears on resprayed areas or where the clear coat is already flaking.
Which area wears out first?
The roof and the bonnet, because they take the sun head-on. On a car that always sleeps on the street, the difference against the sides becomes visible to the eye over the years.
Can ceramic coating extend the life of the wrap?
It helps with maintenance: dirt sticks less and washing is gentler, which reduces wear. It does not stop UV, which is the main factor.
Do I have to redo the whole car or only the worn areas?
You can redo it by areas, but bear in mind the new film and the old one will not match exactly in tone. On plain light colours the difference shows.
Does the warranty cover colour loss?
Premature fading within the manufacturer term is a material warranty case. The quote states the exact film reference so the claim can be filed.
