Headlights are polycarbonate, not glass: gravel chips them and the sun clouds them. Replacing a modern light unit costs what it costs, and protecting one with film is among the best value-for-risk-avoided jobs in the whole workshop.
It is not bad luck: it is the combination of material and position.
Modern light units are polycarbonate with a protective lacquer layer. It is light and impact-resistant, but it scratches easily and its outer layer breaks down under sunlight.
They sit on the most exposed part of the front end. Everything thrown up by the wheels of the car ahead reaches the bumper and the headlights first.
When the outer layer breaks down, the headlight turns matte and yellowish. It can be brought back with a headlight polish, but every polish uses up material and cannot be repeated indefinitely.
An LED or matrix light unit is one of the expensive parts on the car. Protecting it costs a tiny fraction of replacing it.
Options
The neutral option: the headlight keeps its appearance and its light output, and is protected against chips and against yellowing from sunlight. It is what we recommend in most cases, and particularly on new cars where the aim is to keep the light unit exactly as it is.
It darkens the headlight and changes the look of the front end as well as protecting it. This is where it pays to be careful: too dark a shade cuts the light output and can cause problems at the ITV roadworthiness test. We work with light shades and explain what that means before applying anything.

We check whether the headlight is sound or already has yellowing and micro-chipping. The film protects from the moment it goes on: it does not bring back a light unit that has already degraded.
If the light unit is already cloudy, it is sanded through the grades and polished first. Putting film over a yellow headlight just leaves it yellow under the material.
A thorough clean of the headlight and the area around it. Anything left under the film shows up badly on a surface that is clear and lit from behind.
Wet installation with the film cut to the pattern for your model, wrapping around the edge where the light unit allows, so no cut edge is left in sight.
All the solution is worked out from underneath and the edges are checked. Some residual moisture can remain over the first few days; it clears on its own, and that is normal.

A very thorough and high-quality job on the entire car: PPF, polishing, ceramic coating, wheels... and especially the vinyl wrap during the Chrome Delete service. Very happy with the result and the service.
